Committee

If you have any questions or suggestions, these are the people you need to talk to.

Chairman: Chris Beer

"I started playing when I was 11, which means I have been playing for 16 years now! I was absolutely rubbish at football, but I was tall - so volleyball seemed the better option. I started playing for Speedwell, where I went from a beginner to playing National League. I then left Bristol to go to university in Plymouth, where I played for the uni men's team - the highlight of which was reaching the British University Finals back in 2003. I moved back to Bristol in 2004 and joined BVC as it was a friendly club which also played a good standard of volleyball. On one of my less-sober nights I was then persuaded to stand for chairman, and over the past few years have overseen some major reforms to the club - taking it from a club with receding membership, to its present position as the largest club in the Bristol area. Last year I set targets to consolidate our mens and ladies 1st teams in the NVL during their first season playing at that level, which we completely blew away with both teams gaining promotion! So as the new season approaches I am hoping for more success for our teams on court, and more great socials off court."

Club Secretary: Kara van Aelst

"Did I choose, was I forced, or was I destined to play volleyball? After 9 months of being throw around in my mother’s womb from her playing days, it must be the later. I have never been far away from volleyball, whether it be stuck in a pushchair while Dad or Mum played, or playing over the washing line with the Glanville’s. I ended up following in my Dad’s footsteps and played for Speedwell Volleyball Club where I was taught everything I know today. This included the real use for a spoon, how to treat the opposition, how to windsurf and most importantly how to enjoy yourself. When I left Bristol I found myself in Germany and played for 3 years with TV Oberneuland. That was a great experience as our team had 2 ex German Div 1 players and the standard in the local league was excellent. My highlights have been to get promoted from Div 4 to Div 1 in consecutive seasons with Speedwell VC and playing for the England Juniors. On my return to Bristol I joined Bristol VC as my sister used to play for them (we really are a volleyball family), and I already knew some players from previous summer tournaments. I have just completed my season with Bristol VC which has been eventful. Our men’s team somehow got prompted and the socials have been great, well what I can remember of them anyway."
